Bridging the Gap: Starlight Organisation Supports Education in Malawi

Starlight Organisation engaged with learners and parents at Manja Primary School in order to understand educational needs and offer necessary support. This interaction served as an opportunity to listen to the participants and also to highlight the ongoing challenges faced by many families striving to provide their children with quality education.

There was a heartfelt discussion with the students, who shared the problems they encounter at school: a lack of essential resources, including school supplies, that are critical for their academic success. Their stories were filled with determination and reflected the barriers many faces on their educational journeys.

Parents also had an opportunity to highlight some of the problems they encounter in providing for their children. One parent shared her story; as a single parent of two children, she expressed her struggles in providing adequate materials for both of her kids. She explained, “If my elder child lacks a school book, I urge her younger sibling to give her the older one’s book if it still has space. It’s not ideal, but it’s what I have to do to ensure that both of them can learn.” Her words resonated deeply, highlighting the profound dedication of parents who, despite their limited resources, continue to prioritize their children’s education.

The parent further articulated her desire for economic opportunities that could improve her family’s situation. “I would be glad if there were opportunities for a small business so that I can adequately support my children’s education,” she explained. Her insight reflects a broader issue within the community, where financial constraints significantly impact children’s access to necessary educational resources.

In response, Starlight Organisation Field Officer Gloria Nkolongo took the opportunity to encourage students to work hard and remain focused on their studies, despite the challenges they face. Nkolongo emphasized the importance of education as a pathway to a brighter future and assured both parents and learners that the organization will explore potential avenues for assistance. “We will look into how we can support you through various initiatives,” she stated, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to advocating for the community.

Additionally, Nkolongo addressed the pressing concern of examination fees for those who had not yet paid their Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) exam fees. She promised the parents and students that provisions will be made to assist them with these critical expenses, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder students’ academic progress. Her assurance brought visible relief and gratitude to those who had been anxious about their children’s future examinations.

The discussion highlighted the importance of collaboration between families, schools, and organizations in addressing educational challenges. It became clear that while the community possesses the will and determination to support their children’s education, additional resources and support systems are essential for fostering a conducive learning environment
